Watts and Botts: the energy implications of AI adoption

Anthony R Harding and Juan Moreno-Cruz

In this research Letter, Harding and Moreno-Cruz combine data on economic activity with likely adoption of AI across occupations and industries to quantify the potential change in energy use and carbon dioxide emissions for the United States. The results present the need to account for both the aggregate energy and environmental implications of AI-driven productivity gains, but also for how these impacts vary across industries based on their specific characteristics.

A framework to assess highest possible ambition in nationally determined contributions under Article 4 of the Paris Agreement

Julia Katharina Schönfeld and Joeri Rogelj

Schönfeld and Rogelj propose a structured framework to implement the concept of highest possible ambition (HPA) in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The research Letter addresses the challenges of the vague definition of HPA, emphasising domestic, international, and implementation considerations, aiming to improve transparency and accountability in the preparation of NDCs. The framework allows societal stakeholders to verify—and if necessary—challenge the due diligence of NDC processes.

Aligning differentiated mitigation capacity with the Paris agreement goals

Elina Brutschin, Christoph Bertram, Luiz Bernardo Baptista, Valentina Bosetti, Vassilis Daioglou, Harmen Sytze de Boer, Laurent Drouet, Florian Fosse, Dimitrios Fragkiadakis, Kostas Fragkiadakis, Oliver Fricko, Shinichiro Fujimori, Jiang Kejun, Volker Krey, Jarmo Kikstra, Silvia Pianta, Setu Pelz, Keywan Riahi, Oliver Richters, Renato Rodrigues, Roberto Schaeffer, Karl Scheifinger, Diego Silva, Isabela Tagomori, Bas van Ruijven, Detlef van Vuuren and Zoi Vrontisi

Brutschin et al. examine how considering technological and mitigation capacities affects the regional distribution of mitigation efforts, fairness, and the development of more policy-relevant pathways. By implementing differentiated carbon pricing and emission caps, the study finds that OECD countries could achieve an 85% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2040.

An empirical assessment of community energy injustice in Makueni, Kenya

Sarah Odera, Jiska De Groot, Debbie Sparks, Dimitrios Mentis and Izael Da Silva

Odera et al. use an empirical approach to examine how stakeholder actions and involvement contribute to energy injustice in Makueni, Kenya. The study finds that income poverty, conflicts between environmental conservation and firewood access, and limited financial resources hinder energy justice, while mistrust between the community and stakeholders worsens the issue. Recommendations include improved communication, equal partnerships, and increased financing for electrification programmes.

Does palm oil really rule the supermarket? An assessment of the three Western supermarket chains

Emily Mae Meijaard, Kimberly M Carlson, Douglas Sheil, Syahmi Zaini and Erik Meijaard

Maijaard et al. investigate the claim that 50% of supermarket products contain palm oil by analysing ingredient lists from around 1,600 food products. While palm/palm kernel oil was explicitly listed in 7.9% of products, up to 40% may contain it via unspecified vegetable oils or oleochemicals. The study highlights the complexity of global supply chains and the need for clearer labelling and systemic impact assessments to support informed consumer choices.
