Quantifying US metropolitan level environmental burdens & benefits from greater localization of vegetable farmingPeter Nixon and Anu Ramaswami

Nixon and Ramaswami’s study presents novel findings on the national potential for the agricultural localization of vegetables. The results highlight implications for metropolitan-scale freshwater groundwater withdrawal sustainability and fertilizer-related PM2.5 air pollution across the United States, with particularly acute impacts in California, the nation’s largest vegetable-producing region. The work provides a systems-level perspective on food system localization and environmental trade-offs.

Shifting climate boundaries for European peatlands

Enahu Tahitu, Juul Limpens and Milena Holmgren

Tahitu et al. identify critical climate thresholds governing peatland resistance across Europe. Their results suggest that climate conditions for the remaining 7% of peatlands are most likely to persist in Northern Scandinavia, western islands, and higher-elevation regions of the European mainland. In contrast, climate suitability for peatlands is projected to decline markedly across Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe, underscoring the urgency of conservation and restoration efforts in climatically resilient areas.

Adapting urban water supply infrastructure and policies for wildfire in the 21st century

Erik Porse, Greg Pierce, Faith Kearns, Edith de Guzman, Camilo Salcedo and Hope Hauptman

This Perspective examines how contemporary urban wildfires differ fundamentally from historical fire regimes and explores what these changes mean for urban water supply systems. Porse et al. emphasize the role of risk analysis in infrastructure decision-making, alongside challenges related to funding, water quality, and supply reliability. The study highlights land-use planning as one of the most effective and readily available tools for improving wildfire preparedness and prevention.

Is climate change relevant? Mainstreaming the dialogue on Climate Change in Amman, Jordan: A survey of a societal segment

Luna Khirfan

This research paper explores public perceptions of climate change in Amman, Jordan, revealing a disconnect between expert-led urban planning strategies and residents’ understanding of local climate risks. The findings show significant gaps in awareness of ecological loss and climate impacts, contributing to climate injustice and weakened urban resilience. The study argues that inclusive and authentic public dialogue is essential for mainstreaming climate action in rapidly growing Middle Eastern cities.

Beyond one-size-fits-all: a path toward region-specific flash drought monitoring and management

Gabriela Gesualdo and Antonia Hadjmichael

This research paper demonstrates that flash drought detection varies widely depending on the indicator used, with metrics such as soil moisture and precipitation often failing to agree on drought onset. The authors argue that effective early warning systems require a shift away from universal definitions toward region-specific monitoring approaches tailored to local climate conditions and water-use sectors. Such differentiation is critical for improving drought preparedness and management.
