This focus collection is dedicated to exploring cutting-edge advances in novel materials and artificial intelligence (AI) in road engineering. The collection features articles focusing on the design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced materials—such as self-healing concrete, recycled polymers, nanomaterials, and bio-based binders—and their performance validation in road applications. These new materials will offer superior durability, sustainability, and functionality. Additionally, it covers AI-driven technologies like machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision, which assist structural defect detection and predictive maintenance, thereby facilitating real-time decision-making, improved predictive accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and large-scale infrastructure optimization.
This focus collection will cover a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

Road Materials: self-healing materials, geopolymer composites, nano-enhanced aggregates, recycled materials, phase-change materials, and smart sensors.

AI Methods: reinforcement learning, digital twins, neural networks, and big data analytics.

Emphasis will be placed on:

  • The application of novel road materials in road construction and repair.
  • Autonomous infrastructure inspection and maintenance.
  • AI-guided road materials development and recycling strategies.

All Guest Editors (Mofreh Saleh, Svetlana Besklubova, Hui Yao, Chaochao Liu, and Fangyuan Gong) have confirmed they have no conflicts of interest relating to this focus collection.
