2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the introduction of the Rabi model.
The Rabi model represents the most simple interaction between a two level atom and a light field. This fundamental model for matter-light interaction continues to inspire and underpin many developments in both mathematics and physics. Recent application areas of the quantum Rabi model include quantum computing and information processing, circuit quantum electrodynamics, quantum simulation, entanglement generation, multi-level and multi-photon systems, and hybrid mechanical systems. Mathematical progress continues to be made with regard to different aspects, including hidden symmetries, asymmetric and non-Hermitian extensions, quantum phase transitions, spectral distributions, the concept of integrability in quantum mechanics, and connections to abstract mathematics via the non-commutative harmonic oscillator.
This focus collection intends to attract high quality papers on mathematical and physical aspects of the quantum Rabi model and its many variants and extensions and will focus further attention on the quantum Rabi model and related ongoing developments.
