Power system costs and emissions from data center and cryptocurrency mining expansion in the United States

Jeremiah X Johnson, Cameron Wade, Michael Blackhurst, Joseph F DeCarolis, Anderson R de Queiroz, I Daniel Posen and Paulina Jaramillo

This study examines how growing electricity demand from data centers and cryptocurrency mining could affect the U.S. power sector. The findings suggest that CO₂ emissions could increase by up to 28% by 2030, while regional electricity costs could rise by as much as 57%. Without proactive policies and expanded renewable energy incentives, meeting this new demand could increase reliance on coal and natural gas, posing challenges to near-term climate targets.

Intensifying global heat threatens livability for younger and older adults

L A Parsons, J W Baldwin, G Guzman-Echavarria, O Jay, P Kalmus, H Staudmyer, J K Vanos and N H Wolff

Using 75 years of global data, Parsons et al. show that rising temperatures and humidity are increasingly pushing human physical limits, with some regions already experiencing brief periods when safe physical activity becomes impossible. These livability constraints have expanded significantly since 1950 and intensified during El Niño events and in 2024, disproportionately affecting older adults across tropical regions of South, Southwest and Southeast Asia, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa.

Adapting the source of protein in diets to reduce carbon emissions: a UK case study exploring aquaculture

Jenny Baverstock, Daniel Romero-Saavedra and Guy Matthew Poppy

This study explores how changing dietary protein sources in the UK could reduce carbon emissions while delivering benefits for human and environmental health. The findings suggest that replacing beef with salmon could reduce emissions by 28% per person per week, while broader reductions in meat and dairy consumption could achieve emissions reductions of up to 39%. The results highlight the potential of dietary shifts to contribute to national climate targets.

Determining U.S. residential primary heating fuels for energy analysis and planning

Jordan M Joseph, Destenie Nock and Constantine Samaras

This dataset article introduces a toolkit for analysing and visualising primary residential heating fuels across the United States from 2011 to 2023, based on American Community Survey data. The dataset covers nine fuel types and shows that natural gas was the dominant residential heating fuel during 2019–2023, providing a useful resource for energy analysis and planning while also highlighting potential limitations in estimating its prevalence.
