亮点文章

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

VHEE beam dosimetry at CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research under ultra-high dose rate conditions

This study characterizes a plane parallel ionization chamber at CERN’s CLEAR facility using a 200 MeV laser-driven electron beam. It investigates dose-per-pulse, polarity effects, and ion collection efficiency, enabling active dose measurement and improving experimental equipment at the facility.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Assessing the cost-effectiveness of DNA origami nanostructures for targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs to tumours

Targeted nanostructures can deliver chemotherapy drugs directly to tumours, reducing side effects and drug dosage. DNA nanostructures show promise for cost-effective drug delivery, with barriers being technical, regulatory, and ethical rather than financial. This approach could be a profitable and less harmful therapeutic option.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Light-based 3D printing of hydrogels with high-resolution channels

Hydrogels, used in personal care, medicine, and biomedical engineering, can be structured into complex 3D shapes using light-based 3D printing. This study presents an approach to create well-defined channels in hydrogels by incorporating photoblocker and optimizing print conditions, enabling complex designs with low cytotoxicity for biological applications.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

TIGRE: a MATLAB-GPU toolbox for CBCT image reconstruction

The TIGRE Toolbox is a MATLAB/CUDA tool for fast, accurate 3D x-ray image reconstruction. It features various iterative algorithms, GPU-accelerated projection and back projection, and a modular design for easy algorithm implementation. Released under an open-source license, it encourages contributions from the community.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

A mechanistic investigation of the oxygen fixation hypothesis and oxygen enhancement ratio

Oxygen in tumours significantly impacts radiotherapy outcomes, with well-oxygenated cells responding better by a factor of 2.5–3. This effect, explained by the oxygen fixation hypothesis, is crucial for current and future therapies. A new model based on physical principles describes oxygen-enhanced damage accurately, revealing a minor thermal dependency.

TOPICAL REVIEW | OPEN ACCESS

Minimization of parallax error in positron emission tomography using depth of interaction capable detectors: methods and apparatus

This paper reviews methods to minimize parallax error in positron emission tomography imaging using depth of interaction (DOI) concepts. It covers apparatus, methods, and advantages, particularly improving spatial resolution. Limitations in DOI decoding are also discussed, highlighting potential pitfalls depending on the specific task.
