Editor-in-Chief Vacancy：Biomedical Physics & Engineering Express

The Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) invites applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief for Biomedical Physics & Engineering Express (BPEX). We are seeking a visionary leader to drive the journal forward and ensure it continues to publish high-quality, impactful research. The starting date for this role is 1 December 2025. The term is for three years, with possibility for extension.

Please note this is a voluntary editorial position which attracts an honorarium, and is not a salaried position.

About Biomedical Physics & Engineering Express

Biomedical Physics & Engineering Express (BPEX) is an inclusive, international, multidisciplinary journal devoted to publishing new research on any application of physics and/or engineering in medicine and/or biology.

Characterized by a broad geographical coverage and a fast-track peer-review process, relevant topics include all aspects of biophysics, medical physics and biomedical engineering. The journal has an emphasis on publishing interdisciplinary work and bringing research fields together, encompassing experimental, theoretical and computational work.

The general management of the peer review process for all submissions we receive, including reviewer selection, is managed independently by our in-house team of Editors.

About the Editor-in-Chief Role

As Editor-in-Chief, you will collaborate with the IOPP journal team to set the strategic direction for BPEX to expand its reach and impact within the global biomedical physics and engineering community. You will lead the Editorial Board, working closely with its members to identify key areas for growth, implement editorial initiatives, and achieve agreed aims.

In this role, you will:

Lead: Provide scientific guidance and editorial board leadership to ensure the journal meets the community’s needs.
Develop: Collaborate with the Editorial Board to develop new ideas and initiatives that reflect the evolving landscape of research in the field.
Advocate: Act as an ambassador for the journal, enhancing its status and visibility within the scientific community.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a candidate who has:

Extensive Knowledge: A broad understanding of the field of biomedical physics and engineering.
Editorial skills: Objective and astute editorial decision-making with extensive experience on a journal Editorial Board.
Leadership Skills: Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire and manage an international team.
Effective Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse audiences, as well as engage in difficult conversations with authors about rejections and appeals.
Commitment to Integrity: A strong commitment to scholarly integrity and ethical publishing practices.
Alignment with DEI Goals: A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the role.
Adaptability: A dynamic approach to adapting to the rapidly changing publishing environment.
