How does urbanization process affect urban heat island effect? Interpretation of 31 citis in China based on local climate zones

Yu et al. investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics  of the urban heat island (UHI) effect and identified urban expansion (UE) and  vegetation reduction as the primary contributors to the UHI intensification. The study offers national outlooks on the UHI effect, to inform sustainable  urban planning and climate change adaptation within city design.

 

Can we estimate, and even predict, terrestrial water  storage months in advance during severe large-scale Amazon droughts?

In this Research Letter, Liu et al. present a novel method  for predicting terrestrial water storage (TWS) during droughts, using monthly  variations in TWS and meteorological data from 2003 to 2023. Their approach  offers a reliable means of estimating low water storage, enabling earlier  warnings of water deficits across the Amazon. This method also shows promise  for broader application in other regions, supporting water security and  climate adaptation policies.

 

Who can change what? Self-perceived, attributed and structural influence among actos in the  Swedish grain legume system

This study by  Scheuermann et al. uses Sweden as an illustrative case study to investigate  actors’ perceptions of influence over actions identified to have leverage to  change grain legume consumption and production, and examines system  structures that support or hinder these actions.

Understanding household water insecurity after an  industrial crisis

Toland et al. investigated the factors linked with  household water insecurity following the East Palestine chemical spill in  Ohio. The study undertook a community survey, and utilised a combination of  traditional statistical methods and advanced ML techniques. The results  presented that 31% of respondents experienced household water security,  mainly influenced by perceptions of water safety, bottled water source,  changing water sources, and renter status.

 

Air Partners: a  model for centering community priorities in air justice projects

Francesca Majluf, Emmanuel de Barros, Sonja Tengblad, Liliana Tirado Arteaga, Valinda Chan and Scott Hersey

This  Perspective by Majluf et al. explores two community-driven air justice  projects in Boston, involving HEPA air purifiers and a community-led air  monitoring network. The case studies highlight the adaptability of their  engagement model across distinct partner organisations, while acknowledging  its limited generalisability beyond similar environmental justice contexts.
