主题范围

Microplastics have emerged as an environmental contaminant of concern, posing risks to ecosystem integrity and human health. Since the rise of plastic production in the 1950s, the pervasive contamination of plastics in diverse environmental matrices—including drinking water, oceans, rivers, lakes, snow, air, and within our food and bodies—has become a global concern, underscoring an urgent need for comprehensive review to understand the basic scientific processes and develop effective risk mitigation and management strategies.

This collaborative focus collection seeks to assemble research articles, reviews, and perspectives to provide a comprehensive view of the multifaceted environmental interactions with plastics, including nano-, micro-, and macro-plastics. Areas of interest include a broad spectrum of human-environmental interactions with plastics, including built infrastructures, wildlife, human health, ecosystems, agroecosystems, food systems, governance and policy.

We invite submissions that investigate production, prevalence, exposure, toxicology, transfer, and management. This issue represents an opportunity for researchers to contribute to an interdisciplinary discussion on plastic pollution, highlighting innovative findings and proposing actionable solutions. We also welcome and encourage “state of the science” reviews or meta-analyses on any topic within the scope of this collection.

Contributors may select from one of six participating fully open-access journals for their submission, allowing alignment with their focus and audience.

Example topics include, but are not limited to :

  • Plastic and natural disasters
  • Plastic in agriculture and implications for food security, water usage, crop yields, sustainability, supply chains, etc.
  • Human health implications of plastic exposure
  • Aquatic and terrestrial plastic pollution
  • Plastic in energy systems (for example pyrolysis and gasification)
  • Plastic in infrastructure, for example, building materials, wastewater treatment facilities, etc.
  • Plastic in textiles
  • Degradation and fates of plastic in the environment
  • Plastic and planetary boundaries
  • Plastic pollution and human rights

文章要求

Environmental Research Letters—ERL is a high-impact Letters journal, intended to be the meeting place of research and policy communities concerned with environmental change and management. Articles should be focused on the impact and significance of results and be of interest and accessible to researchers working in other fields, appealing to the broad and multidisciplinary readership.

Environmental Research Communications—ERC welcomes all types of environment-related research, including disciplinary/interdisciplinary work, regional and local case studies, negative/null results and replication studies. The journal does not make a subjective assessment on the potential future significance and impact of a paper, instead it provides a platform for rapidly communicating research that meets high standards of scientific validity and rigour.

Environmental Research: Health—ERH is devoted to addressing important global challenges at the interface of the environment and public health in a way that bridges scientific progress and assessment with efforts relating to impact/future risks, resilience, mitigation, adaptation, security and solutions in the broadest sense.

Environmental Research: Ecology—ERE is devoted to addressing important global challenges at the interface of environmental science, large scale ecology, biodiversity and conservation in a way that bridges scientific progress and assessment with efforts relating to impacts of global change, resilience, mitigation and adaptation in the broadest sense.

Environmental Research: Food Systems—ERFS is devoted to addressing the science of sustainable food systems in a way that bridges efforts relating to global change, resilience, mitigation, adaptation, security and solutions in the broadest sense.

Environmental Research: Infrastructure & Sustainability—ERIS is a unique outlet for the publication of multidisciplinary work on all facets of infrastructure, sustainability and resilience in their broadest sense, not just environmental assessment and protection but also economic and social factors.
