The EU, within its green deal, made the decision to enhance the 2030 Greenhouse Gas emission reduction target, including emissions and removals, to at least 55% compared to 1990. To achieve low emissions during the post-COVID-19 era, a key priority will be the investment, and development, of green energy technologies at the lowest cost. According to the Bloomberg energy finance reports, the overall energy spending for cleaner energy technologies (including offshore renewables) and low emission investments for alternative technologies, increased by 9% in 2020. This trend will likely continue over the next decade, with both global and national investors increasing their investments for energy efficiency, renewables, carbon capture, utilization and storage of hydrogen. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) encourage researchers in trade, environment, energy, and related fields to adopt an integrative, rather than isolative, approach, and more research is needed to examine the relationship between energy investments, energy security, and the challenges to renewable energy sources, manufacturing, and overall sustainable production.
This special issue is dedicated to studying environmental impacts through the lens of energy security challenges, greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable production. This collection aims to advance knowledge in energy policies (during and post-COVID-19 era), renewable energy, environment, and sustainable production through the dissemination of research that promotes holistic sustainability for the greater welfare of humanity. Academic scholars and researchers must fulfill a dual function: confirm findings across geographies through various databases and rigorous techniques, and provide strategies for a speedy and economically viable transition to renewable energy.

All contributions to this research topic must be within the scope of the special issue and journal, as defined in their mission statements. Contributions covering the following topics are encouraged:

  • Energy security
  • Green energy
  • Sustainable production
  • Emerging and developing economies
  • Energy investments
