Soil pollution is a pressing global issue with significant impacts on ecosystem health, food security, and climate resilience. This special issue seeks to advance our understanding of the biogeochemical processes involved in soil contamination and to explore the broader ecological and environmental implications of soil pollutants. We aim to bring together research that addresses how soil pollution affects biogeochemical cycles, the provision of ecosystem services, and the distribution of contaminants across diverse landscapes, including mining sites, agricultural lands, and natural ecosystems. Given the role of soil pollution in altering adjacent terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, this issue is timely in shedding light on cross-ecosystem impacts and potential restoration solutions.
We invite submissions on topics including, but not limited to:
- Biogeochemical processes of soil pollutants and contaminant interactions with soil constituents
- Effects of soil pollution on ecosystem services, including carbon storage, water filtration, and nutrient cycling
- Geographic and spatial distribution of soil contaminants across varied land uses and climates
- Impacts of mining, agricultural practices, and climate change on soil quality and pollution
- Cross-ecosystem contamination pathways and impacts on adjacent environments (e.g., water bodies, forests)
- Innovative approaches for remediation, restoration, and sustainable soil management in polluted sites
