主题范围

During the past several decades, the Global Earth System has changed significantly, especially across Northern Eurasia. Changes in the socio-economic conditions of the larger countries in the region have resulted in a variety of regional environmental changes that can have global consequences. The Northern Eurasia Future Initiative (NEFI) has been designed in 2015 as an essential continuation of the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI), which was launched in 2004. NEESPI sought to elucidate all aspects of ongoing environmental changes, to inform societies and, thus, to better prepare them for future development. A key principle of NEFI is that this development must now be secured through science-based strategies co-designed with regional decision makers to lead their societies to prosperity in the face of environmental and institutional challenges. NEESPI scientific research, data, models, and knowledge created a solid base to support the NEFI program. The first NEFI Focus Issue of the Environmental Research Letters was launched in 2017 and was completed in December 2022. During this six-year-long period, a number of manuscripts devoted to various aspects of the Northern Eurasia studies were submitted to this NEFI Focus Issue. After rigorous review process, more than 75 of them were published in the ERL as Open Access papers. We expect that this new ERC NEFI Focus Issue will pick up a relay baton from the first NEFI Special Issue for the next 5-6 years. This new Issue and will continue serving as a major outlet for teams of international scientists presenting their new results concerning Northern Eurasia climatic, environmental, and economic changes and social development. These results are based on the NEFI research vision and its science questions(http://nefi-neespi.org/NEFI-ExecutiveSummary.pdf) which are:
  • How can we quantify and project ecosystems dynamics in Northern Eurasia when these dynamics may be internally unstable?
  • What are the major drivers of the ongoing and future changes in the regional water cycles?
  • How can the sustainable development of societies of Northern Eurasia be secured in the near future?

To address these questions, nine research NEFI foci have been identified and studies that address these foci in Northern Eurasia will be especially welcome within this focus issue. These include:

  • warming of the Arctic;
  • changing frequency, pattern, and intensity of extreme and inclement environmental conditions;
  • retreat of the cryosphere;
  • changes in terrestrial water cycles;
  • changes in the biosphere;
  • pressures on land-use;
  • changes in infrastructure;
  • societal actions in response to environmental changes;
  • quantification of Northern Eurasia’s role in the Global Earth System.

Due to powerful feedbacks between the Earth and Human Systems in Northern Eurasia, it is proposed that Integrated Assessment Models are developed as the final stage of the global change assessment which will include assessment of sustainable development within Northern Eurasia. This overarching goal of the NEFI modeling endeavor will enable evaluation of economic decisions in response to changing environmental conditions and justification of mitigation and adaptation efforts.
