This special issue marks the 10th anniversary of the Milan Urban Food Pact (MUFPP). This is a pivotal moment to assess progress on the urgent need for urban food system transformation, and plan for the next decade of urban food research, practice and policy. With over 290 signatory cities, the MUFPP has fostered a global commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. However, food and nutrition insecurity, environmental degradation, and wider economic challenges impact food producers and consumers globally, challenging public and planetary health. This special issue recognizes the transdisciplinary nature of these challenges and the need for collaborative solutions bridging across sectors and disciplines. We seek contributions from across the world that analyse both the systemic barriers hindering progress and the innovative solutions being implemented worldwide. We are particularly interested in papers that explore the MUFPP’s recommended areas of action governance, sustainable diets and nutrition, social and economic inequality, food production, food supply and distribution, and food waste, social prescribing and urban food production, access to land, architectural, and regulatory barriers for achieving desirable transformation, rural-urban food system interactions, territorial food systems, and proposals for how the field of urban food systems needs to transform.
