主题范围

Cities are on the frontline of climate change, simultaneously confronting severe risks and shouldering significant responsibilities for rapid mitigation and adaptive transformations. Urban areas face escalating threats from extreme weather events, heatwaves, flooding, and water scarcity, all intensifying under changing climatic conditions. These risks disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, exacerbating inequalities and challenging urban governance and infrastructure.

Cities also must undertake accelerated, steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Urban centers contribute significantly to global emissions through energy consumption, transportation systems, building infrastructures, and waste management practices. Addressing these emissions at the urban scale is essential to align with international climate targets and limit global warming.

Despite substantial research efforts, critical knowledge gaps persist. This Focus Issue aims to systematically address these gaps by systematic reviews and overarching quantitative assessments of:

  • Systematic understanding of the case study literature on cities (impacts, adaptation, mitigation, governance, planning vs experiments, health, policy sequencing) that is specific for different world regions;
  • Quantitative typologies of cities, both global and specific for world regions;
  • Connecting typologies with case study literature;
  • Mitigation and adaptation pathways and sequencing; alignment with Paris agreement and NDCs;
  • Financing of urban transitions;
  • Systematic quantitative evaluation of urban scale mitigation and adaptation (and combined mitigation and adaptation action);
  • Co-benefits, well-being and health benefits of mitigation and adaptation actions.
