PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Noninvasive modulation of essential tremor with focused ultrasonic waves

Thomas S Riis et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 016033

This article demonstrates that low-intensity focused ultrasound can robustly modulate deep brain regions in humans with notable effects on overt motor behavior.

NOTE | OPEN ACCESS

Safety, tolerability and blinding efficiency of non-invasive deep transcranial temporal interference stimulation: first experience from more than 250 sessions

Pierre Vassiliadis et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 024001

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Intensity- and frequency-specific effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation are explained by network dynamics

Zhihe Zhao et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 026024

The results presented in this study provide a mechanistic framework for understanding the intensity- and frequency-specific effects of oscillating electric fields on neuronal networks. This is crucial for rational parameter selection for tACS in cognitive studies and clinical applications.

PAPER

Early prediction of dementia using fMRI data with a graph convolutional network approach

Shuning Han et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 01601

This study offers valuable insights into the application of GCNs in brain analysis and early diagnosis of dementia. This contributes significantly to the understanding of MCI and has substantial potential for clinical applications in early diagnosis and intervention for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

One-shot random forest model calibration for hand gesture decoding

Xinyu Jiang et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 016006

Real-time myoelectric experiments with 18 participants over two days demonstrated the improved accuracy of the proposed approach when compared to benchmark user-specific RF and the linear discriminant analysis models.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Understanding the influence of confounding factors in myoelectric control for discrete gesture recognition

Ethan Eddy et al 2024 J. Neural Eng.21 036015

This work examines, for the first time, three confounding factors and their effect on the robustness of discrete myoelectric control: limb position variability, cross-day use, and a newly identified confound faced by discrete systems gesture elicitation speed.

PAPER | OPEN ACCESS

Neuronal functional connectivity is impaired in a layer dependent manner near chronically implanted intracortical microelectrodes in C57BLwildtype mice

Keying Chen et al 2024 J. Neural Eng.21 036033

This study provides a detailed characterization of network connectivity dysfunction over long-term microelectrode implantation periods. This new knowledge could contribute to the development of targeted therapeutic strategies aimed at improving the health of the tissue surrounding brain implants and potentially inform engineering of adaptive decoders as the FBR progresses.

NOTE | OPEN ACCESS

Survival and maturation of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic progenitors in the parkinsonian rat brain is enhanced by transplantation in a neurotrophin-enriched hydrogel

Giulia Comini et al 2024 J. Neural Eng. 21 024002

This study shows that transplantation of human iPSC-DAPs in a neurotrophin-enriched collagen hydrogel improves graft survival and maturation in the parkinsonian rat brain. The data strongly supports further investigation of supportive hydrogels for improving the outcome of iPSC-derived brain repair in Parkinson’s disease.
