Reliability and safety are crucial attributes of system operation. The supporting theories and methodologies to deal with complex systems in varying and extreme environments differ significantly from those applied in traditional environments. Extreme environmental conditions such as ultra-high pressures, extreme temperatures (both high and low), intense electromagnetic and radiation fields, as well as high humidity and extreme loads in deep sea, deep earth, deep space and other such environments, pose new and more stringent requirements on the reliability and safety of complex systems. On the other hand, the working environment inevitably changes over time, leading to complicated failure and degradation behaviors of engineered systems. Such real context of operation necessitates the development of novel reliability and safety theories and methodologies, and techniques of testing and simulation, for their effective and robust application in practice.
This special issue focuses on reliability and safety methods, physical/mathematical and data-driven models, reliability testing, system lifetime prediction and performance evaluation, intelligent operation and maintenance of complex systems in varying and extreme environments. The objective of the special issue is to establish a platform of exchange of the latest research on the reliability and safety assurance of engineered systems under varying and extreme condition, in support to the advancement of reliability and safety science and engineering.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Advances in safety and reliability theories and methodologies for complex systems under varying and extreme service/natural conditions
- Novel fault diagnosis and health management of complex systems under varying and extreme service/natural conditions
- Advances in reliability testing and modelling of complex systems under varying and extreme service/natural conditions
- Engineering application of novel reliability and safety methodologies on complex systems under varying and extreme service/natural conditions
- Reliability and safety of complex systems at extreme spatiotemporal scales, such as critical infrastructures, ultra large spacecraft and ultra small systems represented by micro nano robots
- Integration of advanced algorithms (e.g., machine learning, AI, Multi-source data fusion) for complex systems reliability and safety assessment under varying and extreme service/natural conditions
