Materials Research Express is delighted to launch its fourth Focus Collection dedicated to emerging investigators, providing an opportunity to showcase their innovative research in material science, and to be considered for the Emerging Investigator Award . The edition is led by our editor-in-chief, Professor Judy Wu (University of Kansas) and our board member, Professor Yi Cao (Nanjing University), and its scope encompassed all fields within materials science, presenting the very best cutting-edge research from emerging investigators.

This collection is open to emerging investigators holding academic positions within research institutions, who received their PhDs within 12 years (excluding career breaks) as of 2026. Eligible submissions must list an emerging investigator as either the first, corresponding, or co-corresponding author.

Two Emerging Investigators Awards will be presented. Each award will be conferred upon an emerging author whose paper is selected as a ‘Best Paper’ by the Editorial Board. The Board will consider several factors, including the quality of the scientific content, citations and downloads metrics, Altmetric scores, and peer review evaluations.

Authors are encouraged to submit a cover letter or a valid certificate confirming that the designated emerging investigator, who is also the main contributor to the submission, obtained their PhD within the past 12 years. Please include details of where and when the PhD was obtained. Each paper may nominate only one emerging investigator.

Award recipients will receive:

• Highlighting of their Best Paper on the journal’s collection webpage.
• Announcement of the awards and interviews with the winners in our newsletter and across IOP Publishing’s official social media channels.
• A full article processing charge (APC) waiver for one future Materials Research Express publication, valid for two years.
• An electronic certificate of recognition.
• A £500 monetary prize (excluding tax).

All editors have confirmed they have no conflicts of interest relating to this focus collection.
