Nanostructured luminescent materials have garnered significant interest in the scientific community due to their unique structural, optical, and electronic properties, which distinguish them from microscale and bulk materials. They encompass a variety of compositions including semiconductors, rare earth elements, metals, oxides, both inorganic and organic polymers and manifest in diverse forms such as nanoclusters, quantum dots, nanotubes, and nanowires. Presently, luminescent nanomaterials find utility across a broad spectrum of fields including display technology, solid-state lighting, solar cells, lasing, optical sensing, biomedical imaging, biomolecular electronics, phototherapy, and environmental control.
Despite their extensive applications, the relationship between production, structure, and properties remains inadequately understood. By comprehending and mastering this relationship, the performance of luminescent nanomaterials can be significantly enhanced and tailored to meet specific end-use requirements. This Focus Issue aims primarily to explore the fundamental understanding of luminescence mechanisms associated with nanoscale dimensions and nanostructures. This includes, but is not limited to, the analysis of up-conversion and down-conversion effects, energy transfer mechanisms for enhanced emission, quantum confinement effects, and resonance-related phenomena. The objective of this Issue is to compile exemplary work in this rapidly evolving field, which will stimulate application-oriented research in the aforementioned technologies.
