An example of a summary on the designer’s choices of Plasmonic optical fiber (extrinsic and Intrinsic) transducers and receptors combinations so to realize custom bio/chemical sensor devices (in terms of detection ranges and targets).
Recently, new sensor configurations, materials, and devices have been developed to excite surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and Localized SPR (LSPR) phenomena in order to improve the sensors’ performances, miniaturization, multiplexing capabilities, and the microfluidic integration of sensors in several application fields (e.g., bio/chemical sensing). In particular, SPR and LSPR sensors based on glass, plastic or specialty optical fibers are exploited in demanding applications, including medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, industrial applications, food safety and security. Therefore, the aim of this Special Issue is to bring together innovative developments in the transducer schemes (optical fiber Intrinsic or Extrinsic schemes), smart materials, sensing approaches, and applications of sensors realized exploiting Optical Fibers.

Papers addressing the wide aspects of this technology are sought, including but not limited to, recent developments in:

  • novel transducers schemes;
  • hybrid devices;
  • the combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Plasmonic sensors;
  • novel sensing approaches to improve the sensitivity;
  • new miniaturization and multiplexing capabilities;
  • novel bio/chemical receptors;
  • new types of optical fibers for sensing;
  • new applications.
