Development of emerging materials represents the foundation stone for designing next-generation energy conversion (solar and fuel cells) and storage (batteries, supercapacitors and hydrogen storage) devices. Emphasis is on overcoming the efficiency limits of current devices, enhancing their stability, and also developing flexible or wearable configurations.

This focus collection aims to showcase current progress in emerging materials for energy conversion and storage aspiring to solve the trade-off between energy and power densities. Contributions focusing on sustainability (moving towards earth-abundant materials), scalability (developing low-cost synthesis methods) and emerging materials for hybrid systems (combining batteries and supercapacitors into single devices providing both high energy and power) are welcome.

Submissions are encouraged that aim to highlight current challenges and trends in the development of key classes of emerging materials for energy conversion and storage, such as: carbon-based and metallic nanostructures, metal organic frameworks, MXenes, perovskites, chalcogenides and wide band-gap semiconductors.
