主题范围

Material and texture selection, along with form, colour and gloss are examples of product qualities. Well-polished metal or wooden surfaces and finely woven cloth are examples of articles particularly designed to appeal to the human senses of vision and touch. One major factor of perceived quality is the impression given by the product during ‘haptic exploration’ by the end-user (or potential purchaser). Haptic feedback is employed by modern archaeologists to better understand the past.

Touch is a multi-scale, and multi-axis, sense yet this is not generally considered when filtering roughness data to describe tactile experience. Perception depends not only on the physical characteristics of a surface (topography, temperature, chemistry, etc.) but also the condition of the skin (elasticity, hydration, etc.).

Quantification by standardized measurement parameters, such as roughness coefficients, do not show direct correlation with human perception. Colour and gloss also have a significant impact on the perceived quality of objects, and structural colour defeats the human ability to detect the true colour of a surface. Human sensation and perception are indeed affected by psychological factors. This has led to the adoption of concepts such as soft metrology, Kansei engineering and affective engineering in an attempt to link physical and human factors.

Researchers are today beginning to combine these fields to better understand human perception and the human response to objects and their surfaces. This collection aims to demonstrate the latest research informing and interpreting the perception of surfaces.
