获奖文章:Moiré-modulated band gap and van Hove singularities in twisted bilayer germanene

In this work we synthesized and studied a twisted bilayer of germanene, the germanium analogue of graphene. By rotating the two layers, we were able to form a moiré pattern, which we mapped its structural and electronic properties using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. We found that the electronic band gap is not uniform across the moiré. It opens in some stacking regions and closes in others, while the edges are metallic. We also observed two clear spectral peaks (van Hove singularities) and used them to extract the charge-carrier velocity. Our tight binding calculations show that an external electric field can switch the system through two different topological phases, making twisted germanene a promising platform for tunable quantum states.

Yes. I believe that early recognition helps establish scientific credibility and independence, which is important for securing funding, building a group and starting new collaborations. It also affirms that the chosen research direction is promising.
🌟 您接下来的研究和职业规划是什么?
Scientifically, I would like to other twist angles, and apply electric fields to tune the topology in the system systematically. It will be very interesting to bring the van Hove singularities closer to the Fermi level to search for correlated phases. I am also working on germanene nanoribbons which is another system that could provide novel quantum phases to study experimentally.
