Urban areas worldwide face increasingly complex challenges due to the intersection of climate change and urbanization. To effectively address these challenges, a thorough understanding of urban dynamics is needed alongside improved predictive capabilities for devising low-carbon strategies, reducing uncertainties, and mitigating extreme events. Cities are significant contributors to climate change, accounting for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions. In recognition of this fact, there has been a growing focus on developing urban climate change adaptation and mitigation plans aimed at improving climate resilience. These plans address issues at the interface of multiple sectors such as land use planning, transportation, building, waste management, green infrastructure energy, food, water, and governance.

This focus collection aims to explore the multifaceted relationship between cities and climate change adaptation and mitigation. We invite research that investigates how actions taken in urban areas can contribute to achieving targets for both adaptation and mitigation, as well as any potential trade-offs that may arise from these efforts. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Integrated approaches to urban climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • Smart cities to facilitate transformative approaches to adaptation and mitigation
  • Empirical evidence of the contributions of climate action plans to mitigation and adaptation
  • Governance of cities to facilitate just adaptation and mitigation
  • Co-benefits for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
