This special issue will focus on advances in membrane technologies inspired by nature to address global sustainability challenges. It will delve into the development, characterization, and application of these membranes, emphasizing their significance in sustainable processes.

Key topics include:

  • Design and fabrication of nature-inspired membranes, showcasing advances in membranes inspired by natural systems; scalable manufacturing methods such as those employing self-assembly or 3D printing; emphasis on recyclable or bio-sourced materials for membranes.
  • Nature-inspired membrane technologies for gas separation, featuring breakthroughs in membranes intended for, e.g., CO2 capture, biogas upgrading, and direct air capture.
  • Applications of nature-inspired membranes in the energy sector, covering areas like fuel cells, battery technology, hydrogen production, and renewable energy systems.
  • Use of membranes in water and waste treatment, spotlighting nature-inspired membranes in desalination, wastewater treatment, and resource recovery to enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
  • Dynamic and adaptive membrane systems, focusing on membranes that mirror the adaptive responses found in nature, adjusting to variations in feed composition or operating conditions.
  • Lifecycle and sustainability assessments: a comparison of the environmental, social, and economic effects of nature-inspired membranes versus traditional methods.
  • Computationally assisted design of nature-inspired membranes or fundamental insights, through molecular and multiscale simulations, as well as using assistance from machine learning and AI tools.

This special issue will demonstrate how the principles of nature-inspired engineering and membrane technology intersect to develop transformative solutions that promote sustainability in the energy, water, and resource management sectors.
