主题范围
This STMP special issue is dedicated to the unique surfaces that make up works of art and cultural heritage. Surfaces cover everything, and come in all sizes and shapes with a wide range of properties and functions such as appearance, friction, adhesion, heat transfer, reactivity, and many more. The surfaces of works of art and cultural heritage such as paintings, sculptures, watercolors, historical documents, rare books, archaeological objects, mixed media, and many other types of objects tend to be delicate and sensitive yet undergo the same deteriorative physicochemical interactions that engineered surfaces experience. These art and cultural heritage surfaces deserve to be investigated.
This special issue encourages further surface studies of these venerable objects in museums, libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions worldwide. Surface metrology has been useful in the arts, cultural heritage, archaeology, and humanities, as it has opened new research avenues for surface characterization and the preservation of art and cultural heritage.
Published studies so far have addressed ancient coinage, dental textures of fossil hominins, silver gelatin photographs, and daguerreotypes, consolidation of porous archaeological objects, paintings on canvas and icons, examination of the edge curvature of stone tools, and the surface roughness of brush strokes in oil and acrylic paintings, implying that the quantification of surface textures has potential in attributions and other applications.
