主题范围

Biofabrication includes a family of key enabling technologies in regenerative medicine: it applies 3D printing principles to develop custom-made (patient-specific) constructs to function as cell support in cell culture applications or for regenerative medicine. Over the last decades, biofabrication has gained increasing attention within the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This is a consequence of the potential to fabricate complex, patient-specific constructs that closely resemble the complexity and heterogeneity of native tissues and organs. Within tissue engineering field, two main strategies are currently being explored based either on the design of a (bio)material support mimicking the extracellular matrix (ECM) or the use of cell-secreted materials (e.g., decellularized ECM). Rapid prototyping fabrication techniques can be used to fabricate custom-made reproducible scaffolds for subsequent cell seeding or implantation. Alternatively, the biomaterial can be used in combination with cells to form a bioink to be utilized in bioprinting technologies. Such techniques need mild processing conditions to preserve cell viability during cellularized scaffold manufacturing.

The current issue welcomes all contributions encompassing the development, processing or application of biomaterials and hydrogels to be exploited as innovative bioinks for deposition-based (i.e., ink-jet or syringe-based) or light-based 3D-printing technologies (i.e. laser-based Stereolithography (SLA), Digital light projection-based stereolithography (DLP) or two-photon polymerization (2PP)).
